Horse meat is known as a high nutritional value food because of its low-calorie, low-cholesterol, high protein, rich glycogen and iron, and minerals. Eating horse meat is one of taboos in some regions of the world. However, it has been a precious protein source in Japan over 400 years.
"Shigotouma" is a restaurant specified in charcoal fire grill to introduce fascination of horse meat cuisine. On the menu, there are Basashi (raw horse meat), grilled dish, carefully prepared ham and sausage, and also charcuterie (processed meat product).
The recommended dish is "Today’s assorted 5 kinds of grilled meats." Different parts are chosen daily among horse, beef and pork. (4,309 yen for 500g)
Their recommended appetizer is "Assorted Charcuterie" which is an assorted plate that includes 6 kinds of cold dish such as foie gras flan, smoked horse tongue, horse meat steak tartare and others (1 serve 990 yen. The minimum order for this dish is two).
"Assorted Basashi (4 kinds, 1,825 yen~)" including Mongolian grassland horse meat transported directly from Mongolia. "House made grilled rare horse meat hamburg steak (1,393 yen)" has been a popular dish since this restaurant opened. Horse meat is known as not to give dull feeling in the stomach because of its lower melting point of fat. So, don’t worry about having a course full of meat.
Their list of drinks, wine and sake, is well considered to go along with food. Especially with "Fresh wine from a barrel," you can enjoy the fresh taste from Europe. This wine’s light taste is like a water and perfect for less fat horse meat. Of course, it would match other meat dishes.
