The place some people want to visit in summer is haunted house. “ONRYOU ZASHIKI” is an attraction located in LaQua zone, Tokyo Dome City Attractions. It is produced by a haunted house producer, Hirofumi Gomi. The new style direction of “no shoe” rule has become a hot topic.
The story takes a place at an old house with a dark secret. A beautiful woman, Youko once lived in this house. And she died a violent death caused by her husband’s infidelity. Since then, dreadful things have happened in this house.
That is the story of “ONRYOU ZASHIKI.” To settle Youko’s vengeful spirit, Onryou, the participants are given their mission.
Mr. Gomi tells us the highlights of “ONRYOU ZASHIKI.” “A key of haunted house is the experience where you are facing actual fear. It is different from the experience you get from horror movies or ghost stories. With “ONRYOU ZASHIKI,” we try to heighten the density of experience to pursue the essence of haunted house.”
Mr. Gomi says, “Besides sight and hearing, the sense of touch plays a big role in haunted house.” In “ONRYOU ZASHIKI,” the participants’ feet become unprotected by taking off shoes. And sensing with their feet seems to build their imagination.
The specially directed summer version, “ONRYOU ZASHIKI EXTREME” will be held until September 23rd! “ONRYOU ZASHIKI EXTREME” has an additional character, Fumiko haunted by Youko’s Onryou. “Western world’s ghost stories have simple structure but Japanese ones have many layers. For example, in “KASANEGAFUCHI” unfortunate events pile up, which is the root of very Japanese fear. In sense of that, “ONRYOU ZASHIKI EXTREME” is based on “ONRYOU ZASHIKI,” and adding a character gives more layers to the story.”
“Needle” and “shoji screen” are the keys. “Most of time, soft things give safe feeling. But if something different is among them, aren’t you startled? We offer a needle as a sharp thing and a soft thing for mission at the same time, which appeals to instinctive fear.”
On the other hand, shoji screen makes you imagine something strange is behind it. “Shoji screen is very Japanese interior. It seems very fragile and also is the tool which gives a feeling that something is behind it. Shoji screen’s boundary is obscure. So, it may represent a boundary between this world and that world.”
“ONRYOU ZASHIKI” and Haunted house “ONRYOU ZASHIKI EXTREME” bring fear from another dimension by well-considered stories and tricks. They promise you the most frightening experience of this summer.
