A Chinese restaurant “Houei”, serving Sichuan and Shanghai cuisine, attracts the most attention around the Myogadani area. The chef of Houei, Mr. Shindou had worked as a head cook and manager for a well-known Natural Chinese cuisine restaurant “Gessekai,” in Dogenzaka, Shibuya. After he left it, he opened his own restaurant two years ago.
Soon after the opening, this restaurant was introduced in a TV drama “Gourmet of Lonliness” and also the Michelin Guide Tokyo 2018. “Houei” attracts gourmets across wide range of age groups. The secret of popularity is the unconventional original menu based on the traditional way of cooking.
“Kou Shui Ji” is a popular Sichuan cuisine known as “Saliva Chicken” which is a steamed juicy chicken with hotness by “ma” from Sichuan pepper and “la” from Chili. A classic “Ma Po Dou Fu” using homemade “jiang” which is a seasoning paste, is full of ground meat, ginger and garlic. Stimulating hotness goes with soft tofu and you may not be able to stop eating it. There is a version of it with soft roe only served in winter.
All foods are considered paring of alcohol. Huang Jiu is carefully selected by the chef and nicely matches with their foods. There are variety of alcoholic drinks. They have Huang Jiu which is one of the world’s three old alcoholic drinks, a list of wines and homemade medical herb sake which contains ginger, Chinese ginseng and herbal medicines.
At present, they serve a la carte and “Trial course” 2800 yen. It is 7 dishes course includes popular foods such as assorted appetizer (3 kinds), Cong You Ji or Kon Shui Ji, fried shrimp and makomodake with Houei jiang, and Ma Po Dou Fu. And you can consult the chef about price and choice of food and he will plan a customized course for you.
Please come and try foods cooked by Chef Shindou. He controls the taste of local cuisine of Shanghai, Sichuan and many places in China with seasonal foodstuff such as oyster, soft roe and whole chicken in winter, mushrooms in fall, and Sahnghai crab in late fall.
